Although garbage disposals are intended to grind up food, there are food items that should never be put down the disposal. Of course, little men with jackhammers is one thing you shouldn't put in there. The list below covers other food items that should never be in your disposal.
  • Bones
  • Celery
  • Coffee Grounds
  • Egg Shells
  • Fruit Pits
  • Grease
  • Pasta
  • Potato Peels

How do I clean my garbage disposal?

Periodically cleaning your garbage disposal will help prevent and remove foul odors. Cleaning your disposal weekly will also keep you from finding out just how foul those smelly gremlins can be.

First, clean the baffle as food particles can get trapped underneath. The baffle is the heavy-duty rubber piece designed to keep food particles from splashing up from the disposal when in use.

With the disposal off, simply apply dish soap to an abrasive sponge and scrub underneath the baffle to remove the yucky stuff.

Inexpensive Ways to Clean your Garbage disposal

  • Ice & Vinegar

Fill the disposal with ice cubes. Next, pour a cup of vinegar into the disposal. Run the disposal for several seconds with the water turned on to grind up the ice. Repeat if necessary.
  • Baking Soda and Vinegar

Please note, when that mixing vinegar and baking soda it will really fizz up. If you don’t believe us ask your kids how to make “lava.” Placing the stopper over the opening is an important step that you don’t want to miss.

First, pour in ½ cup of baking soda into your disposal. Next, “slowly” and “carefully” pour in ½ cup of vinegar.

Place the stopper over the opening to trap the fizzing baking soda inside the disposal.

Wait a few minutes, remove the stopper and flush the garbage disposal with hot while it’s running.

Please note if you have two basins use the same amount of baking soda and vinegar in the other sink drain as well. Don’t forget the stopper!
