Garbage Disposals & Turkey bones for the Holidays

by Apple Plumbing Services • November 27, 2019
Smelly Grinch in Garbage DisposalThanksgiving is almost here, grab your pillow and get comfy while we tell you about why turkey bones and garbage disposals don't work well together!
Thanksgiving, that wonderful time of the year to celebrate the holiday with family and friends. From turkey and dressing to the cranberry resembling a roll of biscuits, spending time with family and friends is what makes the holidays so special.

The Abominable Garbage Disposal!

Patiently sitting in the kitchen ready for the meal to end is your abominable garbage disposal. Daily you count on your silent food crushing friend to dispose of your left-overs.
Disposals typically work so well at crushing just about everything that we throw at it that we begin to think we can put anything in there, however, not so fast!
Let's talk turkey! Turkey bones can easily damage the disposal blades or jam the unit which can cause the motor to burn out. Now that doesn't paint a good ending to an otherwise perfect day.
You see, abominable garbage disposals are indeed pretty durable, but they weren't meant to take on the world, so don't expect the following food items to bond well with your disposal.
  • Bones
  • Celery
  • Coffee Grounds
  • Egg Shells
  • Fruit Pits
  • Grease
  • Pasta
  • Potato Peels

Preparing for the Holiday Feast!

As you get out your best china for the Thanksgiving feast, don't forget to clean your garbage disposal. Clean disposal will keep the laughter flowing in the kitchen while preparing for the feast.
Cleaning your abominable garbage disposal will help prevent and remove foul odors before the guests arrive. Also, cleaning your disposal weekly will keep you from finding out just how nasty those smelly Grinch's can be.

How do I Clean My Garbage Disposal?

First, you want to clean the baffle as food particles can get trapped underneath.

The baffle is the heavy-duty rubber piece designed to keep food particles from splashing up from the disposal when in use.
With the disposal off, apply dish soap to an abrasive sponge and scrub underneath the baffle to remove the unpleasant stuff.

Inexpensive Ways to sanitize your Garbage Disposal for the Holidays

No need to add to your holiday grocery list!

Once you've cleaned under the baffle, using a few everyday household items, you can have your disposal squeaky clean long before your guests arrive.
  • Ice & Vinegar for the Holidays

Fill the disposal with ice cubes. Next, pour a cup of vinegar into the disposal. Run the disposal for several seconds with the water turned on to grind up the ice.

    Repeat if necessary.
  • Baking Soda, Vinegar & Fizz!

Please note, when that mixing vinegar and baking soda will fizz up! If you don't believe us ask your kids how to make "lava."

Placing the stopper over the opening is an important step that you don't want to forget.

    First, pour in ½ cup of baking soda into your disposal. Next, "slowly" and "carefully" pour in ½ cup of vinegar.}

Place the stopper over the opening to trap the fizzing baking soda inside the disposal.

Wait a few minutes, remove the stopper and flush the garbage disposal with hot while it's running.

Please note if you have two basins, use the same amount of baking soda and vinegar in the other sink drain as well.

    Don't forget the stopper!
